Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR)
STTR is theĀ Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. This program is similar to the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program but focuses more on facilitating collaborations between small businesses and nonprofit research institutions, such as universities and federal laboratories.
The STTR program was created by the U.S. Congress in 1992 as part of the Small Business Research and Development Enhancement Act. The program aims to expand funding opportunities in the federal innovation research and development (R&D) arena.
- Fostering Partnerships: STTR.gov is designed to bridge the gap between performance of basic science and commercialization of resulting innovations by promoting a partnership between small businesses and research institutions.
- Commercialization of Technology: The program helps small businesses and their research partners to develop and market new technologies, offering a pathway from ideas to implementation.
- Research Collaboration: By requiring the small business to formally collaborate with a research institution, STTR strengthens the research capabilities of small businesses and helps institutionalize knowledge transfer.
- Diverse Sector Engagement: Similar to SBIR, the STTR program spans multiple sectors including technology, health, energy, and environmental sciences, reflecting broad federal research interests.
- Resource Hub: STTR.gov provides essential information, including program regulations, application processes, and examples of successful projects, to guide applicants through the complexities of the funding process.
